Da Capo Abstract ImageOur homes are dual registered as a children's homes and independent schools for children with special needs.Since each pupil attends school where they live we can waste no time in reinstating habits of regular attendance, study and achievement in children who may have experienced considerable disruption to their education. A full school timetable is followed. Teaching is delivered 1:1 by qualified teachers supported by, and working closely with, Learning Support Workers and the therapeutic care team.

Therapeutic care,healthy lifestyles and individualised education are planned and delivered in an integrated manner to ensure that each supports and reinforces the work of the other. Each pupil has a tailor-made educational programme with full access to the National Curriculum. Individual learning targets, teaching methods, materials and resources are selected on the basis of assessed special needs and abilities, preferred learning styles, pupil’s interests and contribution to the overall placement plan. Progress is systematically monitored and reported. Formal accreditation of achievement includes ASDAN and GCSEs (AQA & Edexcel).

Ofsted's summary of it's inspection of Hillgate Farm school (December 2006) is reproduced in full below.

"Hillgate Farm School is justifiably proud of the good quality education it provides. It
fully achieves its stated aim to nurture pupils’ belief in themselves and restore their
self-confidence. It successfully re-engages them in learning. The provision offers an
outstanding balance between pupils’ social and academic needs. The curriculum is
highly individualised for them and is secured by good quality schemes of work. The
quality of teaching is good and done in imaginative and integrated ways, matched
well to pupils’ attainment and needs. The assessment of their learning and personal
development is meticulous. The school uses these data effectively to plan further
interventions, which culminate in pupils’ good progress and achievement. The
provision for the welfare, health and safety of pupils is outstanding.

What the school does well:
• it provides a caring ethos;
• it enables pupils, through good teaching, to value learning and achievement;
• its staff are responsive to pupils’ emotional and behavioural needs and treat
them with respect, adding value to their lives;
• its staff share a common vision and use effective techniques in teaching and
managing pupils with EBSD;
• it closely monitors pupils’ personal development and well-being and
encourages them to adopt a healthy lifestyle; and
• it ensures that pupils receive appropriate therapeutic support to address their
emotional difficulties".

The Stubbs Independent Special School's last Ofsted Inspection was on 6 July 2007. Again the summary "Evaluation of the school" is quoted in full:

"The Stubbs school provides a good standard of education and outstanding welfare
support for its pupils. Consequently, pupils make good and sometimes outstanding progress in their learning and achievements. They enjoy a huge measure of success in their personal development, including displaying good behaviour and attitudes to learning. The school’s curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of each individual and provides a good range of learning opportunities. The quality of teaching and assessment is good. There is excellent joint working and cooperation
between care staff and teachers. This provides a continuation of the outstanding welfare support for pupils whether they are in the classroom or in the home. The school meets all of the regulations and exceeds requirements in several of them. The school’s own self-evaluation is broadly accurate."
